Since January 1997 Matt has been working in the field of criminal defence. He has a background of dealing with cases of the utmost seriousness and complexity.
In 1999/2000 he was involved in the case of R v Hanley & Others, dubbed the most successful cocaine smuggling gang ever to target Britain. During a trial lasting 15 months Matt travelled alone to Rio de Janeiro to trace witnesses.
Between 2004 - 2007 he successfully represented a defendant in the case of R v Adams & Others, widely reported in the national press following an investigation by the Police and Security Services into a man they said was the head of Britain’s biggest crime family.
Since then he has gone on to deal with a countless number of cases involving murder, serious violence, drug importation & supply, fraud and money laundering. He has also gained significant experience in proceedings at the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords (now the Supreme Court).
Matt has a particular expertise and interest in cases involving organised crime and financial crime. The Legal 500 gives him praise for his client care and his down to earth personality.
Matt takes pride in the fact that most of his instructions are as a result of recommendation from clients he has previously represented and from other professionals. His experience of dealing with cases at the most serious end of the scale results in repeat instructions in that type of work.
Matt is head of the Crown Court department at JSP Law and has been a significant driving force in the firm being recognised by the Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners as a leading firm, within 10 years of it being established.
When not at work Matt plays golf, walks the dog and enjoys time with his family. He is a football fan and used to have a season ticket at Manchester United until his children arrived. Now he’s more of an armchair fan but enjoys watching his sons play football on a Sunday.
All areas of Criminal law with significant experience in serious and complex Crown Court cases.
